Jakera Tours started life as an adventure travel outfitter in the mid-90’s. Founder Chris Patterson had worked his way across the Caribbean and was looking for an exiciting base to set up his own business and make a home. He was amazed by the incredible diversity offered in Venezuela – a country where you can go ice climbing all year round in the Venezuelan Andes OR enjoy pristine sunkissed beaches and azure Caribbean waters OR hike in the most amazing terrain of the Gran Sabana OR kayak deep into the Orinoco Delta with lush primary jungle bursting with wildlife overhead ALL THE TIME being wrapped in a vibrant South American culture including encounters with indigenous peoples living a life we have long forgotten…
We quickly earned a reputation for doing things differently. We shipped in a fleet of sea kayaks from New Zealand and pioneered kayaking in the Orinoco Delta. This attracted some media interest and we have been featured in many magazines and TV productions.
In the early 2000’s we developed student programs combining Spanish language tuition with adventure travel. A short time later we added meaningful volunteer programs to our menu so that we could feed back some of the positive energy generated by our student groups into the local communities we live with.
We now have a base in Merida – on the main square of the old town, in this fun and lively university city – as well as our Caribbean Lodge on Playa Colorada in Mochima National Park. We have a great international and diverse team including Venezuelan’s and indigenous peoples.
We look forward to sharing our experience of Venezuela with you… as we say, Viva la Vida!!
